Jamaat-e-Islami has filed an appeal for a quick hearing to restore its registration as a political party. On Sunday (May 4), the party's lawyers submitted the appeal to the Appellate Division.

The appeal stated that while the hearing for Jamaat's appeal had started, it was suddenly postponed. Since the party's registration and political future are directly linked to this case, the appeal requests an expedited hearing.

After the hearing, the Appellate Division stated that the matter may be brought before the court on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Earlier, on March 12, 2025, the appeal hearing for restoring Jamaat's registration began.

On October 22, last year, the Appellate Division revived the appeal to restore Jamaat’s registration as a political party. This decision was made by a bench of four judges led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Mahmud Hossain, which opened the way for Jamaat to continue its legal battle to regain its registration and party symbol.

Jamaat’s lawyers, including Barrister Ehsan A Siddique and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir, argued on behalf of the party, while Advocate on Record Ali Azam represented the petitioners.

On August 1, 2013, the High Court declared Jamaat's registration as a political party illegal, and on December 7, 2018, the Election Commission formally canceled Jamaat's registration and issued a notification.

Despite this, Jamaat filed an appeal, but in November 2023, during the appeal hearing against the High Court's verdict, the party's chief lawyer was absent, leading the Appellate Division bench, headed by then Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, to dismiss the appeal due to default, thus upholding the High Court's decision.

Meanwhile, on August 1, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement, the government banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, under the Anti-Terrorism Act. However, later on August 28 of the same year, the government withdrew this ban and issued a new notification.
