An arrest warrant has been issued against director Chonika Chowdhury in connection with a cheque dishonor case filed by producer Rashedul Islam Riaz.
On Tuesday, May 6, the Seventh Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Bulbul Islam of Dhaka issued the order. The information was confirmed by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Abdus Salam Hiemel.
According to court sources, the hearing for cross-examination of the plaintiff, Rashedul Islam Riaz, was scheduled. However, the accused, Chonika Chowdhury, failed to appear in court. Her lawyer requested additional time, but the court rejected the request, canceled her bail, and issued an arrest warrant. The court also set June 26 for the next hearing to present arguments in the case.
Rashedul Islam Riaz filed the case on May 14, 2013. Chonika Chowdhury later surrendered to court on June 2, 2014, and was granted bail. The case was transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court on August 7, 2014, and on February 10, 2015, the court framed charges against her.
According to the case details, producer Rashedul Islam Riaz and Chonika Chowdhury entered into a contract on August 24, 2012, for the production of the drama "Jibon Sundor Hok." As per the agreement, the plaintiff paid Chonika Chowdhury 230,000 taka. On October 30, 2012, Chonika issued a cheque of the same amount to the plaintiff.
However, Chonika Chowdhury did not proceed with the production of the drama as agreed. When the plaintiff requested a refund, Chonika asked him to attempt cashing the cheque. After multiple attempts to cash the cheque, it was dishonored. Despite sending a legal notice requesting the refund, Chonika did not return the money, leading to the lawsuit.
