The Bangladesh Youth Rights Council, an affiliate of Gano Adhikar Parishad, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
On Thursday (May 8), the organization held a protest in front of the Ministry of Home Affairs, alleging that the adviser assisted in allowing former “dummy president” and murder accused Abdul Hamid to flee the country under the protection of the interim government.
Gano Adhikar Parishad’s General Secretary Md. Rashed Khan was present as the chief guest at the event. A 12-member delegation later handed over a memorandum to Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Md. Ataur Rahman Khan, NDC, outlining the group’s demands.
The memorandum, addressed to Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, stated that according to media reports, Abdul Hamid fled the country at 3:05 AM on Thursday, along with his son and brother-in-law, with the help of the interim government.
The group questioned how such a high-profile accused individual could escape while the Home Affairs Adviser was in charge. They labeled Abdul Hamid a fascist collaborator and a murder accused, warning that if the government fails to respond, take action against those responsible, and bring Hamid back within 48 hours, the Home Affairs Adviser must step down with dignity.
They further warned that failure to meet these demands would trigger a nationwide protest movement demanding the adviser’s resignation. The statement condemned the interim government, accusing it of straying from its mandate.
“The people entrusted you with the responsibility to bring justice for the July massacre, ban the Awami League, reform the state, rehabilitate the injured, and honor the martyrs,” the statement said. “Instead, you are now seen aiding in the rehabilitation of the very forces you were supposed to oppose. On behalf of the people’s uprising, we express our strongest condemnation and outrage toward your actions.”
