To protect the environment and biodiversity, the government has imposed a ban on the establishment of new industrial plants within 10 kilometers of the Sundarbans.
This ban was announced through a notification issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change on Monday (May 12).
The notification states that under Section 5 of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (amended in 2010), a 10-kilometer area around the Sundarbans Reserve Forest has been designated as an Ecologically Critical Area (ECA). No new industrial plants or projects can be established within this area.
Furthermore, only environmentally friendly and sustainable activities will be allowed within the restricted area, aiming to preserve the natural environment, improve environmental quality, and control pollution.
The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has emphasized that this step is crucial for ensuring the protection of the Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) surrounding the Sundarbans.
