Three individuals have been arrested by Shahbagh Police in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Samya. The information was confirmed on Wednesday (May 14) by Mohammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The arrestees are identified as Md. Tamim Howlader (30), Samrat Mallik (28), and Md. Palash Sardar (30).
The incident occurred on Tuesday night (May 13), when Shahriar Alam Samya, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at Dhaka University and the Literary and Publications Secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of the student organization Chhatra Dal, was fatally stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan.
Two of his friends—Bayezid and Rafi—who are also students of the same institute and academic session (2018–19), were injured in the attack.
Bayezid told Kalbela that around midnight, the three friends were leaving a canteen near the Kali Temple adjacent to Suhrawardy Udyan when a group of 8–10 attackers suddenly assaulted them. Samya sustained severe stab wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
