Leaders of the Chattogram Union of Journalists (CUJ) and the Chattogram Press Club have expressed deep anger and strong condemnation over the attack on the Honorable Information Adviser of the interim government, Mahfuz Alam, in the capital’s Kakrail area.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday (May 15), BFUJ Vice President Shahidul Alam, Joint Secretary General Mohsin Kazi, CUJ President Riaz Haider Chowdhury, General Secretary Sabur Shuvo, Chattogram Press Club President Salauddin Mohammad Reza, and General Secretary Deb Dulal Bhowmik condemned the incident and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice and face exemplary punishment.
According to the statement, the attack occurred on Wednesday night (May 14) during a student protest at Jagannath University demanding new dormitories, campus expansion, and solutions to housing shortages. Mahfuz Alam had visited the protest site with the intention of listening to the students’ grievances. However, he was shockingly assaulted when a bottle was thrown at his head—an act the journalist leaders described as not only deplorable but criminal in nature.
They further stated that such an attack on a government representative is not just regrettable but may be part of a broader attempt to create political instability in the country. They emphasized that violence and chaos under the guise of protest are unacceptable in any democratic society.
