A Bangladesh Biman flight from Cox’s Bazar faced a potentially disastrous situation when one of its wheels detached shortly after takeoff. Thanks to the pilot’s expertise, the aircraft made a successful emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, saving the lives of all 71 passengers on board, including children.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 16. Flight BG 436 (Dash 8-400) took off from Cox’s Bazar at 1:35 PM. Shortly after takeoff, one of the rear wheels of the aircraft fell off, confirmed Bangladesh Biman’s General Manager (Public Relations), ABM Rawsan Kabir.
He stated that the aircraft was carrying over 70 passengers and that the wheel detached soon after the plane lifted off the runway at Cox’s Bazar Airport.
Despite the critical situation, Captain Billal, who was piloting the aircraft, safely landed the plane in Dhaka at 2:22 PM. All passengers and crew members were unharmed.
Immediately after the wheel malfunction, Captain Billal informed Dhaka’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) of his intention to make an emergency landing. The airport quickly activated its emergency response protocols, including preparing fire and rescue services, to ensure a safe landing.
Thanks to the quick thinking and calm handling by the flight crew, what could have ended in tragedy was averted, and all passengers walked away safely.
