Positive Trend in Remittance: $1.61 Billion Sent in First 17 Days of May

In the first 17 days of May, Bangladesh received $1.61 billion in remittances, which amounts to approximately BDT 19,642 crore (calculated at Tk 122 per USD). On average, the country received $94.7 million or BDT 1,155 crore per day during this period.

According to data from Bangladesh Bank, of the total amount, state-owned banks received $493.3 million, while specialized banks—especially Agrani Bank—received over $150 million. Private banks facilitated the inflow of $962.76 million, and foreign banks handled $3.13 million.

However, nine banks recorded no remittance inflow during this period. These include Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB), Community Bank, Citizens Bank, ICB Islamic Bank, Padma Bank, and Shimanto Bank PLC among private institutions. Among foreign banks, Habib Bank, National Bank of Pakistan, and State Bank of India also failed to receive any remittances.

Notably, March 2024 saw the highest single-month remittance in Bangladesh’s history, reaching $3.29 billion. In comparison, January saw $2.19 billion, and February brought in $2.53 billion.

Monthly remittance inflow for 2023 was as follows:

  • January: $2.11 billion
  • February: $2.16 billion
  • March: $1.99 billion
  • April: $2.04 billion
  • May: $2.25 billion
  • June: $2.53 billion
  • July: $1.91 billion
  • August: $2.22 billion
  • September: $2.40 billion
  • October: $2.39 billion
  • November: $2.19 billion
  • December: $2.63 billion

In total, Bangladesh received $26.89 billion in remittances in 2023.

The highest-ever monthly remittance was recorded in December 2023 (approximately $2.64 billion), followed by February 2024 (approximately $2.53 billion).

Remittance continues to play a crucial role in supporting Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves and stabilizing the national economy.
