Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, Bangladesh Bank is preparing to release newly designed Tk 20, Tk 50, and Tk 1000 banknotes into the market. The Security Printing Corporation in Gazipur has already begun printing these notes, which are currently in the final stages of production.

Unlike previous versions, the new notes will not feature a portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, they will showcase graphics related to the July uprising and revert to older design elements.

Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, confirmed that the new banknotes will be introduced before Eid. However, he did not specify the exact release date.

An anonymous senior official from the central bank revealed that the printing of the Tk 20 notes is nearly complete and will be handed over to Bangladesh Bank by next week. The Tk 50 and Tk 1000 notes will follow the week after. Initially, the new currency will be distributed to the central bank’s Motijheel office and other branches, and later to commercial banks. Only a limited number of new notes will be released before the Eid holidays due to lower-than-usual printing volume.

Previously, on March 10, Bangladesh Bank suspended the distribution of new notes featuring Bangabandhu’s portrait following public controversy. Banks were instructed to retain any such notes in storage rather than circulating them, leading to an increase in worn and damaged notes in the market.

The reintroduction of new notes is expected to bring some relief to the public, especially during the high-demand Eid season.
