The ongoing protest by Secretariat officers and employees demanding the repeal of the ‘Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’ has been suspended for one day on Tuesday, May 27. This decision was made following discussions with senior secretariat officials.
In the afternoon, a meeting was held in the Ministry of Land’s conference room between protesting employee leaders and several secretaries, including Land Secretary A S M Saleh Ahmed. During the meeting, it was agreed to temporarily halt the protest activities.
Earlier in the day, Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid convened an urgent meeting with several secretaries. The meeting decided to form a committee to review the controversial ordinance and assigned Land Secretary to engage in talks with the protesting employees.
Protesters inside the Secretariat chanted slogans such as:
Strict security measures were enforced at the Secretariat throughout the morning, with deployment of SWAT, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and police personnel. Access was restricted at the main gate, and even journalists were not allowed entry.
Following the suspension, talks with the government committee are expected to continue.
