A newly formed committee of Savar Sadar Union’s Chhatra Dal has sparked controversy. Allegations have arisen that the committee includes a married individual as well as an active member of the banned student organization, Chhatra League.
On May 17, the North Dhaka District Chhatra Dal President Tamiz Uddin and General Secretary Mahfuz Iqbal signed off on the partial formation of a 24-member committee for Savar Sadar Union Chhatra Dal. Al Momin Akon was appointed as General Secretary and Maruf Hasan as Vice President. Since then, criticism has mounted.
According to local sources, Al Momin Akon concealed the fact that he is married when securing his position in the committee. Meanwhile, Vice President Maruf Hasan was seen actively participating in election campaigns for Ataur Rahman Abhi, the president of the Savar Municipality Chhatra League. Maruf’s family is also known to have longstanding ties with Awami League politics.
Local activists claim such infiltration damages the reputation of Chhatra Dal and have called for a thorough investigation and swift organizational action.
Repeated attempts to contact Al Momin Akon went unanswered. However, Maruf Hasan stated that the photos in question are six years old, from before he was involved in any political organization. He added that he has been active in BNP politics for the past five years.
Tamiz Uddin, President of North Dhaka District Chhatra Dal, told Kalbela that the committee was formed based on recommendations from local leaders. If anyone has gained a position through deception or by hiding facts, appropriate disciplinary measures, including possible expulsion from the committee, will be taken.
