India has expressed its desire for Bangladesh to hold an inclusive, free, and fair election at the earliest possible time, emphasizing the importance of reflecting the will and mandate of the people.
During a regular press briefing on Thursday (May 29), Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Our position on Bangladesh’s elections is very clear and consistent. We believe that Bangladesh should hold an inclusive, free, and fair election as early as possible to ensure the will and mandate of its people.”
Earlier, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, said that the country is preparing for a credible, participatory, and transparent general election. He made the remarks while speaking at the 30th Nikkei Forum in Tokyo, Japan.
Dr. Yunus stated, “We are preparing for a general election that will be free, fair, inclusive, and acceptable — one that upholds justice, equality, freedom, and human dignity. This will lead to a peaceful and effective democratic transition.”
He further noted that in the current global context, marked by instability and transformation, empowering citizens and strengthening grassroots leadership have become more critical than ever.
Dr. Yunus also highlighted Bangladesh’s humanitarian role in the Rohingya crisis and its active participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
