In the proposed budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year, the government has allocated Tk 42,433 crore for the local government sector, marking a decrease compared to the previous year. In the 2024–25 fiscal year, the allocation stood at Tk 45,205 crore, which was later revised down to Tk 42,357 crore.
The proposal was presented on Monday (June 2) at the Secretariat by Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. He stated, “For the upcoming fiscal year, we are proposing an allocation of Tk 42,433 crore for the local government sector.”
He emphasized that the local government plays a vital role in delivering services to the public in areas such as transportation and communication infrastructure, birth and death registration, primary healthcare, environmental development, and access to safe drinking water.
Dr. Ahmed also highlighted several short- and long-term initiatives under the urban development plan, including the construction and improvement of roads, safe water supply systems, drainage networks, modern sanitation, and solid waste management.
In rural areas, the government plans to build safe water sources, install pipelines, construct water treatment plants, and ensure access to sanitary latrines. Additionally, efforts are being made to reduce dependence on underground water and increase the use of surface water, along with implementing hygienic sanitation systems in every household.
