Government employees have long been hopeful about getting an increased hardship allowance. However, instead of a hardship allowance, they are set to receive a special incentive.
This announcement was made by Economic Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed during the national budget presentation on Monday (June 2) afternoon. The new provision will take effect starting July.
He stated that there has been no new pay structure since 2015. Considering this, he proposed increasing special benefits for government employees.
Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed presented the budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 at 3 pm on Monday. Since the parliament is not in session, the budget speech was simultaneously broadcast live on the state-run BTV and other private channels. The size of the new budget has been set at approximately 7.9 trillion taka, which is 700 billion taka less than the current fiscal year’s original budget.
For context, the last time a budget was presented outside parliament was in 2008 when the military-backed caretaker government was in power. On June 9 of that year, then Economic Advisor A.B. Mirza Md. Azizul Islam announced a budget of 9,996.2 billion taka for the 2008-09 fiscal year — also on
a Monday.
