Confusion has spread following media reports claiming that the government has revoked the official recognition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Tajuddin Ahmad, and all members of the Mujibnagar government as freedom fighters.

On Tuesday night (June 3), several news outlets cited a government ordinance stating that the freedom fighter status of key Liberation War leaders had been canceled, reclassifying them as “associates of the Liberation War.” This triggered widespread debate and criticism on social media and online platforms.

However, on Wednesday morning (June 4), the government clarified that the reports were incorrect.

Speaking to the media at the Secretariat, Faruq-e-Azam, an advisor to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, confirmed that the recognition of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four national leaders as freedom fighters had not been revoked.

He stated, “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, M. Mansur Ali, and A.H.M. Qamaruzzaman are all officially recognized as freedom fighters.”

He further explained that members of the Mujibnagar government will continue to be considered freedom fighters. Those who fought in the war or directly led it are classified as freedom fighters, while government officials and employees who served during that time are recognized as associate freedom fighters.

“Diplomats and members of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra are also categorized as associate freedom fighters,” he added. “The term ‘associate’ does not diminish their honor. Despite clear language in the official notification, the issue is being misinterpreted.”

Faruq-e-Azam pointed out that a revised definition of “freedom fighter” has been included in the amended Jatiya Muktijoddha Council (JAMUKA) Ordinance, yet it has still stirred controversy.

He also mentioned that the 1972 definition of a freedom fighter is now being reinstated, replacing changes made in 2018 and 2022. Both freedom fighters and their associates will continue to receive equal respect, dignity, and benefits.

“Without a collective national struggle, our independence would not have been possible,” he concluded. “The Liberation War remains the most glorious chapter in our nation’s history.”
