Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus is set to embark on a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom, with the primary focus of the trip being the recovery of illicitly transferred Bangladeshi funds.
During the visit, scheduled to begin on June 9, Dr. Yunus will meet with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace and hold a bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street on June 11. He will also participate in a policy dialogue hosted by the UK-based think tank Chatham House.
At a press briefing held on June 4, Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique stated that while the visit aims to strengthen the historic ties between Bangladesh and the UK, the top priority will be addressing the issue of money laundering and bringing back embezzled funds.
On June 12, Dr. Yunus is scheduled to receive the "King Charles Harmony Award" at St James’s Palace following his audience with the King.
Commenting on the broader implications of the visit, the Acting Foreign Secretary noted that it will reinforce Bangladesh’s international image, boost diplomatic support for its democratic process, and open avenues for economic collaboration.
While questions have arisen about potential discussions on Airbus purchases, officials clarified that no formal agreements or memorandums of understanding are planned during the visit.
