A memorial festival marking the 96th birth anniversary of pioneering folk musician Halim Boyati will be held on October 30 at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka. The event will begin at 3 pm at the TSC’s Pigeon Square.

The programme will feature a discussion session, a Baul music gathering and the publication of a commemorative book dedicated to the legendary folk artist.

The discussion session will include writer and researcher Shafikur Rahman Chowdhury, photographer Nasir Ali Mamun, writer and researcher Tapan Bagchi, and researcher Saymon Zakaria. Halim Boyati’s son, Nishane Halim, along with his disciples Lal Mia Boyati and Nazrul Boyati, will also share their memories of the artist. A Baul music session will follow the discussion.

Popularly known as Sadhak Halim, Halim Boyati is regarded as a pioneer of Bichar Gaan, a distinctive form of folk music centred on philosophical and spiritual debates. His collection of more than 5,000 songs is known as Halim Sangeet.

Halim Boyati began singing at the age of seven. His compositions explored spiritual philosophy, religious practices and patriotism. He also actively participated in the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

In recognition of his contributions to folk music, he received an honorary fellowship from the Bangla Academy in 2001. He was also awarded the Kabi Jasimuddin Research Gold Medal.

Halim Boyati passed away on February 21, 2007, leaving behind a rich musical legacy. The upcoming memorial festival will provide an opportunity for admirers, researchers and music enthusiasts to celebrate his life, work and enduring contribution to Bangladesh’s folk music tradition.
