BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that the month of April is not suitable for holding elections.

He made this comment on Saturday, June 7, while paying respects at the mausoleum of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

Fakhrul said that the government’s announced timeline does not reflect the aspirations of the people. Due to Ramadan fasting, hot weather, and public examinations, April is not an appropriate time to hold elections. He added that the roadmap was announced without proper consideration.

He further mentioned that holding elections in December would be better for the country.

Earlier, BNP leaders participated in prayers and supplications seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of the former president. Party standing committee members and leaders from affiliated organizations were present.

It is worth noting that the Chief Adviser to the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, announced in a speech to the nation that the 13th parliamentary elections would be held sometime in the first half of April next year. Following this announcement, BNP issued an official response.

In a statement signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on the night of June 6, the party expressed concerns that although the interim government claims to be neutral and nonpartisan, it has ignored the opinions of most political parties under the influence of a particular political group, raising doubts about the fairness of the upcoming elections.

Prior to this, BNP’s highest policy-making forum, the National Standing Committee, held a meeting on Friday night, presided over virtually by the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
