Harry Kane has ended England’s 25-year wait for a Ballon d’Or winner. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker became the first English footballer since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the prestigious award. He also ended Bayern Munich’s 45-year drought, becoming the club’s first winner since 1981.
At the Ballon d’Or ceremony held in his hometown of London, Kane received the trophy from Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário, popularly known as Ronaldo “Fenômeno.” He became the fifth English player to win the award, following Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.
Kane also became Bayern Munich’s first Ballon d’Or winner since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed the honour in 1981.
The England international enjoyed a remarkable season, scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country. He netted 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich, setting a club record for the most goals scored by a Bayern player in a single season.
Kane’s main rivals for the award were Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé, whom he beat to claim football’s prestigious individual honour.
Speaking after receiving the trophy, Kane said, “I’m almost lost for words. Having it here in London makes it even more special. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”
He added, “I know this year has been very difficult. This room is full of world-class players. Congratulations to them and to all the winners and nominees.”
Kane’s triumph marks a significant milestone for both English football and Bayern Munich, ending decades of waiting for the sport’s most coveted individual award.
