The post-uprising BNP government is pursuing a “go-it-alone” policy, said Ali Ahsan Junayed, a member of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Political Council and joint convener.

He alleged that the government was ignoring the people’s mandate, failing to implement the July Charter, and engaging in what he described as theatrics and delaying tactics under the pretext of forming a constitutional reform committee. He also said Tarique Rahman had no right to remain in power if the verdict of the referendum was not respected.

Junayed made the remarks at a protest rally held in the Badda-Link Road area of the capital on Wednesday (October 28).

He alleged that the government was undermining people’s rights and showing indifference toward public safety. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens were struggling to manage their household expenses. Although a public hearing had been expected on gas prices, the government was no longer giving the issue due consideration, he claimed. Instead, he alleged, prices were being raised arbitrarily, placing an additional financial burden on the public.

Junayed further said the NCP would not support a government that did not want to maintain a relationship with the people.

“We wanted to help the post-uprising government move the country forward. But the government is ignoring the people’s mandate and deceiving the people of the country,” he said.

As part of the day’s programme, NCP leaders distributed leaflets and conducted public outreach to protest the deterioration of law and order, increases in fuel prices, soaring prices of essential commodities and alleged politicization of state institutions.

Others present at the programme included Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, senior joint member secretary of the NCP and a candidate for mayor of Dhaka North; Abdullah Al Amin, an NCP Political Council member, joint convener and member of parliament; Saleh Uddin Sifat, and Joint Member Secretary Faridul Haque, along with party leaders and activists from various levels of the metropolitan organization.
