Police have arrested a young man, identified as Md Sadikul Islam Shuvo, 25, with a bottle of foreign liquor in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, just hours before his scheduled wedding.

He was arrested on Thursday (October 29) night from the Amgaon area along the Asian Highway in Jampur Union. His wedding was scheduled to take place on Friday (October 30) in Kandapara village of Rupganj.

Shuvo is the son of Md Nazrul Islam, a resident of Singlabo village in Jampur Union. His father serves as the assistant publicity secretary of the Jampur Union BNP.

According to police, acting on a tip-off, officers conducted a raid near the Amgaon Bridge area along the Asian Highway and detained Shuvo with a bottle of foreign liquor.

A case was subsequently filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act. He was produced before a court on Friday afternoon and sent to Narayanganj District Jail.

Father Claims Son Was Framed

Regarding his son’s arrest, BNP leader Nazrul Islam claimed that Shuvo’s friends had asked him to arrange liquor for a celebration on the night of the Gaye Holud ceremony.

According to his father, Shuvo was carrying a bottle of foreign liquor to fulfil their request when police detained him.

He further claimed that the family was unaware of the matter and alleged that his son had been deliberately framed in a conspiracy.

Police Say Law Will Take Its Own Course

Meanwhile, Sonargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Barik said the law would take its own course.

He stressed that neither a person’s political identity nor a private occasion such as a wedding would influence law enforcement decisions, adding that anyone accused of an offence would be treated equally under the law.
