Iran has taken U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s letter seriously, with the country’s top leadership holding discussions on its contents. However, Tehran has not yet decided whether to engage in direct talks with Washington.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the remarks in an interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday (October 31). The development was reported by the British news agency Reuters.
Araghchi said the letter sent by Vance had been discussed at the highest levels of Iran’s leadership. However, he stressed that there were currently no plans for a direct meeting with the United States.
Earlier this week, Vance sent the letter to a senior Iranian official. He had previously led the U.S. delegation during peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
According to reports by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, Vance proposed resuming peace talks between the two countries in his letter.
However, U.S. President Donald Trump rejected that account. He said the proposal was not intended to restart peace negotiations but rather to discuss allowing medical supplies to enter Iran.
Although Iran has discussed Vance’s letter at the highest levels, Tehran’s position on direct negotiations with Washington remains uncertain. International attention is now focused on what diplomatic steps the two countries may take next.
