The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Meheraj Islam, the prime suspect in the murder case of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of PrimeAsia University. He was apprehended on Wednesday during a joint operation in Gaibandha.
With this arrest, a total of five individuals have now been detained in connection with the case. Earlier, on Monday night, police arrested another suspect, Hridoy Miazi (23), from Monairkandi village in Titas upazila of Cumilla.
The incident took place last Saturday afternoon in front of the university. Two young women were eating singara at a local shop, one of whom was a friend of Piyas, another student of the university. At the same time, Parvez was nearby, chatting and laughing with his friends. Piyas’s friend took offense at his laughter and questioned him. This led to a verbal altercation and shoving between Parvez and Piyas, Meheraj, and Mahathir. The confrontation eventually turned violent, resulting in the fatal attack on Parvez.
Following the incident, Parvez’s cousin Humayun Kabir filed a case naming eight individuals, including two leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and accusing another 25 to 30 unidentified persons.
The day after the murder, Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib alleged in a press conference that the killing was orchestrated by leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
On Sunday night, police conducted raids in different parts of Dhaka and arrested three more suspects: Kamal Hossain, Alvi Hossain Junayed, and Al Amin Sani. Later, on Tuesday, Hridoy Miazi, joint secretary of the movement’s Banani unit, was also arrested.
All five detainees have been placed on a seven-day remand by the court.
