Bangladesh has declared three days of state mourning following the death of Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification on Wednesday night (April 23), announcing that the country will observe national mourning from Thursday, April 24, to Saturday, April 26.

During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government, semi-government, autonomous institutions, educational establishments, and Bangladesh missions abroad. Special prayers will also be held for the late Pope’s soul.

Farewell to a Voice of Compassion

Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, at 7:35 AM local time in Rome. He was 88. Cardinal Kevin Farrell of the Vatican confirmed the news, stating, “Bishop Francis has returned to the Lord. His life was wholly dedicated to God and the Church.”

The Pope had been suffering from long-term respiratory issues. In his youth, one of his lungs was partially removed. Most recently, on February 14, 2025, he was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome due to breathing complications that progressed into double pneumonia. He remained hospitalized for 38 days—his longest stay since becoming Pope.
