Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has credited expatriate Bangladeshis for their crucial role in helping the country’s fragile economy recover.

Speaking at a discussion meeting with Bangladeshi expatriates in Doha, Qatar, on Thursday (April 24), Dr. Yunus said, “When we assumed responsibility, the economy was in a vulnerable state. Today, we have regained stability, and that has only been possible because of your unwavering support. You are never separate from us, no matter where you are.”

Acknowledging the struggles many expatriates face when traveling, he announced that VIP services would soon be introduced at airports for expatriates to ensure a smooth and respectful experience when arriving in or departing from Bangladesh.

Business representatives at the meeting raised concerns about high cargo shipping costs by air. In response, Dr. Yunus stated, “We are taking immediate steps to reduce air cargo fees and make air freight more efficient. We’re also working to improve cargo transport not just from Dhaka but also from Chattogram and Sylhet airports.”

He emphasized that while air travel has traditionally prioritized passenger services, the government is now focusing on cargo transport as well.

To further improve services for expatriates, Dr. Yunus noted that the government is working to digitize all essential services, including passport issuance. He also called on the expatriate community to actively provide feedback and suggestions to help shape these initiatives.

Among those present at the meeting were Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, Energy Adviser Fawzul Kabir Khan, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, SDG Coordinator Lamia Morshed, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Shafiqur Alam, and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Qatar, Md. Nazrul Islam.
