A clash between the Awami League and BNP in Azmiriganj, Habiganj, erupted due to a long-standing dispute, leaving at least fifty people from both sides injured. The identities of the injured have not been confirmed yet.
The incident took place on Friday (April 25) from around 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM.
According to police and local sources, the conflict has been ongoing for several years between BNP leader Akhtar Mia and Awami League leader Shahjahan Mia (also known as Shahjahan Member) from Noagor village in the Jalshukha Union. The dispute revolves around village panchayat fisheries, land revenue, and rural dominance. On Tuesday, April 22, a family dispute involving Shahjahan Member’s supporters led to an altercation where Akhtar Mia’s side was reportedly attacked. Tensions between the two groups had been rising since then, culminating in the clash on Friday morning when both sides, armed with local weapons, engaged in the fight.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals including the Baniachong Upazila Health Complex, Habiganj District Hospital, and others. Five individuals with severe injuries were transferred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
