An auto-rickshaw driver was killed after being stabbed by robbers in Gaibandha. The incident occurred on Thursday night (April 24) near the Gaibandha Stadium.
The deceased, Thanda Mia (28), was the son of Abdur Hamid Mia from the Kishamat Faliya village in the Gidari Union of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila.
Gaibandha Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Shahinur Islam Talukder, confirmed the incident on Friday (April 25), stating that no formal complaint has been filed yet, but an investigation is ongoing.
According to local and police sources, around 3 AM on Thursday, two or three robbers stopped the auto-rickshaw near the stadium. After a brief scuffle with the driver, they stabbed him and fled the scene with the vehicle. The injured driver was later rescued by passersby and taken to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital. From there, he was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning while undergoing treatment.
A local resident, Suja Mia, mentioned that the robbers often use the jungle behind the Gaibandha Stadium Fish Farm Seed Production Office for drug use. He added that the authorities have not taken action against them, and such incidents occur frequently. He urged the authorities to intervene quickly to prevent further incidents.
