Jonaid Saki, the chief coordinator of Ganasanghati Andolon, has called on the National Consensus Commission to take steps toward achieving the highest possible consensus on the issue of reforms.

He made this appeal during a meeting between the Ganasanghati Andolon and the National Consensus Commission on Sunday (April 27) at the LD Hall of the National Parliament.

In the meeting, Saki stated, “The discussions held so far between the Consensus Commission, political parties, and other stakeholders, and the consensus reached based on those discussions, must be documented. For the democratic transformation of Bangladesh, the reform proposals that have not yet reached a consensus should be further discussed in order to build the highest possible consensus.” He further added, “Ganasanghati Andolon will also continue its efforts to help create this consensus.”

Regarding the national elections, Saki remarked, “If the national elections are held after December, the reasons for the delay must be explained.” He also stated, “The timeline mentioned by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus for the elections needs to be more specific.”

Saki further emphasized, “A reform council or assembly must be held to gather the mandate (opinions) of the people. Many are currently saying that constitutional and related matters should be dealt with after the elections, not before. But this is the mandate of the people, and only Parliament can change the constitution. However, other administrative matters that are not related to the constitution can be handled by the interim government through executive orders, and the subsequent Parliament and government will justify those actions.”

The meeting was led by Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the Consensus Commission, and attended by commission members Badiul Alam Majumdar, Safar Raj Hossain, Iftekharuzzaman, former Justice Md. Emdadul Haque, and the Chief Advisor’s Special Assistant (Consensus), Monir Haider. On the other hand, the meeting on behalf of Ganasanghati Andolon was attended by central leaders of the party, including Abul Hasan Rubel, Dewan Abdur Rashid, Taslima Akhter, Hasan Maruf Rumi, Monir Uddin Pappu, Bacchu Bhuiyan, Zulhasnain Babu, and Shyamoli Sarkar.
