Fifty migrant workers have been arrested in the Maldives for illegal residency. The Immigration Department of the Maldives reported on Thursday (April 24) that a special joint operation was carried out in collaboration with the police in the Dhuhufaru area, where these workers were detained.
During the operation, more than 100 migrant workers were searched and questioned. However, the nationality of the arrested individuals has not been disclosed as the investigation is still ongoing.
This operation is part of the ongoing “Operation Kurangi,” aimed at addressing the issue of irregular immigration and ensuring a permanent solution. The operation began in 2023, and so far, more than 6,000 migrant workers have been sent back to their home countries. To avoid capture, many illegal migrants have moved from the capital to various islands, prompting authorities to intensify operations in these areas.
Additionally, the government of the Maldives is conducting a biometric data collection program for migrant workers. According to the Ministry of Homeland Security, one hundred thousand migrants have already provided their biometric data. Migrants who have not submitted their biometric information are required to do so by April 30. Those who fail to comply will face expulsion from the Maldives.
