In a significant diplomatic move, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have officially recognized Palestine as an independent and sovereign state.
On Sunday, September 21, the three countries made the announcement in succession, marking a shift in their approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Canada was the first to declare its recognition, followed by Australia, and finally the United Kingdom.
In a video statement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:
“To revive the peace process and the two-state solution, I am announcing today that the United Kingdom formally recognizes Palestine as a sovereign state.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated:
“Canada recognizes Palestine as an independent state and remains committed to building a peaceful future for both Palestinians and Israelis.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said:
“This recognition is part of a joint international effort alongside the UK and Canada to support a two-state solution and lasting peace in the region.”
Canada and Australia made their positions known ahead of the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly, where the issue is expected to be discussed.
British media had previously reported that the UK would make the recognition official on Sunday, and the announcement followed as anticipated.
