Aman Ullah Aman, member of BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council and former DUCSU VP, has accused controversial figures from Bangladesh’s independence era of trying to derail the upcoming election under the pretext of the proportional representation (PR) system.
He made the remarks on Monday (October 13) at a memorial meeting held at the National Press Club, organized by the Democratic League (DL) to mark the second death anniversary of the party’s former general secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Moni.
Aman said, “A political party is conspiring to sabotage the February election. Those who had controversial roles during the independence war are now trying to disrupt the election in the name of PR. But the election will not be derailed. It will take place in Bangladesh as scheduled, likely in the first half of February. The people are eagerly waiting to vote in that election.”
He added that despite various attempts to malign BNP alongside the election sabotage conspiracies, the party has fought a long and tough battle for the restoration of democracy in the country. “BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has suffered authoritarian repression but never compromised on democracy or betrayed the nation like others,” Aman said.
Aman also announced that BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman will soon return to the country, participate in the upcoming election, and take part in BNP’s election campaigns.
In his speech as a special guest, BNP Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon stated that the people of Bangladesh sacrificed 2,000 lives during the mass uprising to overthrow Awami fascism. He urged everyone to remain vigilant so that fascism never returns. “The people do not want to see those Awami terrorists who committed genocide and crimes against humanity again. We must keep the anti-fascist unity strong to achieve our final victory,” he added.
The memorial program was chaired by DL Vice President Md. Mahbub Alam and conducted by General Secretary Khokon Chandra Das. Other speakers included Dr. Fariduzzaman Farhad, convener of the Nationalist Consensus Alliance and chairman of the National Peoples Party (NPP); ATM Golam Mawla Chowdhury, chairman of the Gono Dal (People’s Party); Syed Nurul Islam, general secretary of the Samyabadi Dal; JAGPA Presidium member Asadur Rahman Khan; and NDP chairman Abdullah Al Harun Sohel.
Md. Mahbub Alam, in his opening remarks, recalled Saifuddin Ahmed Moni’s vital role in the anti-autocracy movement of the 1990s and his struggle against the previous Awami fascism. “Unfortunately, he did not live to see the fall of fascism,” he said.
He also urged everyone to work toward fulfilling Moni’s dream of restoring democracy through the upcoming national election.
