Sargis Alam, chief organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in northern Bangladesh, has warned that the upcoming national election could be delayed if clear prosecution of fascist leader Sheikh Hasina and others involved in genocide is not visible.
He made the remarks on Monday (October 13) after an NCP coordination meeting held at the Jamalpur District Council auditorium.
Sargis Alam stated that the NCP may join any alliance in the next parliamentary elections but will contest under its own symbol. The party plans to participate using the “Shapla” (water lily) symbol.
When asked whether the election will be held on schedule, he said, “If the prosecution of those involved in genocide is not transparent, the election might be postponed.”
He also mentioned that the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Tajul Islam, has indicated that verdicts could be delivered by December, and the government will implement the July Order accordingly.
Responding to questions about why the NCP prefers the Shapla symbol, Sargis said, “Every political party chooses its preferred symbol, and ours is Shapla. The Election Commission will take the necessary steps to accommodate this.”
Regarding the government leasing out three terminals of the Chittagong port to foreign entities, he said, “If the government makes decisions to free these from political party control in the interest of the country, the NCP will not oppose. However, if any decision harms national interest, the party will oppose it.”
The district coordination meeting was chaired by NCP Joint Secretary and district chief coordinator Lutfor Rahman, with the participation of leaders and activists from various upazilas, including NCP leader Moshiur Amin.
