Mufti Amir Hamza, a prominent Islamic speaker and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s nominated candidate for Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency, said, “Since the issue of Aynaghar has come up, I was actually inside Aynaghar. It’s such a harsh place that unless you have been there, you cannot understand. Aynaghar will not come back, and we will never accept its return. This is exactly why we have these five demands.”
He made these remarks on Wednesday (October 15) afternoon during a human chain held on the main road of Kushtia town demanding the implementation of five points, including holding the national parliamentary elections under the Proportional Representation (PR) system, the announcement and implementation of the July Charter. The event was organized by the Kushtia district branch of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Leaders and activists from the district and town Jamaat branches took part in the program as part of a central initiative.
Professor Abul Hashem, Amir of the district Jamaat, said, “The demands we are raising are not only those of Jamaat. Among the 31 parties, 25 have agreed to some extent with these demands. If the government does not accept them with dignity, we will adopt stricter programs.”
During the hours-long human chain, speakers stressed that without the PR system, autocratic rule would be reinstated if elections are held otherwise. Therefore, the upcoming national elections must be conducted using the PR system. They also demanded that the July Charter be announced and implemented before the elections.
Speakers further said that holding free, fair, and acceptable elections in February would ensure the establishment of the people’s voting rights and the formation of a just, accountable, and democratic state.
Present at the event were Suja Uddin Jowardar, Secretary of Kushtia district Jamaat, Enamul Haq, Amir of Kushtia town Jamaat, and other leaders and activists from various levels.
