BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized that all political activities should now be focused within the parliament rather than on the streets.
He made the remarks on Saturday (October 18) at the general meeting of the Nationalist Workers and Employees Union of the Water Development Board, held at the multipurpose hall of the Water Building on Green Road in Dhaka.
Fakhrul stated, “The condition created by the Awami League over the last 15 years cannot be fixed within a year. Therefore, political parties must take responsibility and focus on strengthening the parliament through free and fair elections. Our politics must be parliament-centric.”
He added, “Parliamentary democracy can only succeed if politics is conducted in the parliament, not on the streets. We have been on the streets for a long time; now it’s time to return to parliament and fulfill our responsibilities.”
Fakhrul also called on all political parties to participate in the upcoming election to ensure it is free, fair, and meaningful.
He said, “Yesterday was a historic political event. Most political parties signed the historic July accord, which is an unprecedented event in Bangladesh’s political history. It will strengthen democracy and make politics more transparent and accountable.”
At the event, Manjurul Islam Manju was announced as the new president, and Humayun Kabir as the general secretary of the Nationalist Workers and Employees Union of the Water Development Board. Various labor leaders were present and spoke at the meeting.
