The recent decision to rename the “Suchitra Sen Female Dormitory” at Pabna Government Edward College to “July 36 Female Dormitory” has sparked controversy on social media. While some are in favor, many are voicing strong opposition. Among them is renowned music composer and director Prince Mahmud, who has publicly expressed his discontent.

On Friday (May 23), Prince Mahmud took to Facebook, writing:
“The Suchitra Sen dormitory is now apparently named ‘July 36 Female Dormitory’. Unbelievable! Suchitra Sen isn’t just a pride of Pabna—she’s a national icon. I’ve never heard she had any political ties with the Awami League. Shameful…!”

His post quickly gained attention, with many netizens commenting in agreement. One user remarked, “The tradition of renaming!”—to which Mahmud replied,
“Is this even new? Back in 2010, Zia International Airport was renamed. That’s where it started. As they follow the path of those once considered ‘legendary’ in their own way, perhaps they too hope to be remembered by holding on to borrowed glory.”

According to reports, on May 20, college principal Abdul Awal Mia officially unveiled new nameplates for three dormitories. Present at the event were vice principal Abdul Khaleq, teacher council secretary Lutfar Rahman, and other faculty members. The new names also include those of national figures like Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and members of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family.

It is worth noting that legendary actress Suchitra Sen’s ancestral home is in Pabna. For many residents and fans, having a dormitory named after her was a matter of pride. The renaming decision has triggered disappointment and outrage among locals, with widespread criticism also visible across social media platforms.
