Following a ban on international student admissions at the prestigious Harvard University, Hong Kong has stepped forward, announcing expanded opportunities for foreign students.
Christine Choi, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Education, stated, “Our doors are open to talented students from around the world. We stand with those affected by the recent decision in the U.S.” She also confirmed that the cap on international student intake at Hong Kong universities has been relaxed, making it easier for interested candidates to apply and enroll.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has extended an invitation to students who were studying at or had been admitted to Harvard, offering them a chance to continue their education in Hong Kong. The university added that it has simplified the admission process and will provide academic support to incoming students.
This move comes at a time when former U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Harvard of promoting far-left ideologies and antisemitism. Additionally, U.S. security officials have alleged that the university must be held accountable for alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party and for inciting unrest.
China has dismissed these claims as politically motivated, warning that interference in educational institutions could damage the United States’ global image.
Currently, Harvard hosts approximately 1,300 Chinese students, with thousands more studying across the U.S. in pursuit of quality education and research opportunities.
