Academic activities under Bangladesh’s National University are being severely disrupted due to an acute shortage of teachers and lecturers in both public and private affiliated colleges. To uphold the quality of education, immediate recruitment of contractual teachers and inclusion of non-MPO (Monthly Payment Order) teachers in the MPO scheme have been strongly recommended by the Vice-Chancellor of the National University, Professor Dr. ASM Amanullah.

He made these remarks on Sunday (May 25) while addressing the ‘Student Skills Development Conference 2025’ organized in Chattogram.

Highlighting the alarming situation, the Vice-Chancellor stated, “During recent visits to several colleges, I witnessed a dire shortage of teachers. It is impossible to sustain a country’s education system under such circumstances.” He emphasized that this shortage is severely hampering students’ learning and degrading the overall standard of education.

To address this, the National University has initiated various reforms, including the development and revision of syllabi to align with contemporary demands, mandatory English education, and integration of ICT, software, and hard skills. The university is also working on increasing student attendance in classes and implementing teacher training, college monitoring, and auditing initiatives.

Welcoming the efforts of the National University Skill Development Forum (NUSDF), the Vice-Chancellor said that the university will continue collaborating with NUSDF to enhance the skills of its students. He also noted ongoing efforts to improve the competency of college faculty under the university’s jurisdiction.

The event was attended by Asif Iqbal, founder of Gaanchill Music; convenor A.N.M. Sarwar Alam, Principal of Omar Gani MES College, Chattogram; special guests Abu Sayem Md. Jannatun Noor, Director of Gono Unnayan Kendra; Arif Ahmad, AGM and Head of Compliance and Enforcement at Chattogram Stock Exchange; Badal Sayed, Member (Grade-01) of the National Board of Revenue and founder of Pay It Forward & Honest; and Shafayet Hasan, Vice President and Head of Business and Branch at NCC Bank.
