At least 81 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to a report by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, May 27.
The report states that the attacks began early Monday, with 53 of the casualties reported from Gaza City alone. Gaza’s Ministry of Health confirmed that since the beginning of the ongoing war, 53,977 Palestinians have been killed, and at least 122,966 others have been injured.
Gaza’s Government Media Office claims the actual death toll has surpassed 61,700, with thousands more believed to be trapped under the rubble and presumed dead.
Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports regarding a proposed ceasefire. Although some sources indicate Hamas has agreed to a U.S.-backed ceasefire deal, both Hamas and U.S. officials have issued contradictory statements.
A spokesperson for the World Health Organization said that intensified Israeli attacks and restrictions on aid delivery have left Gaza’s hospitals critically short of medical supplies, making it increasingly difficult to treat the wounded and seriously ill. “Everyone in Gaza is suffering,” the spokesperson added.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing around 1,139 people and taking over 200 hostages. In response, Israel began its military campaign in Gaza.
