Bangladesh Bank is introducing a new series of banknotes showcasing the theme “Historical and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh.” The redesigned 1000, 50, and 20 Taka notes will enter circulation on June 1, 2025 (18 Jyaishtha 1432 in the Bengali calendar), as confirmed on Thursday (May 29) by the central bank’s Executive Director and spokesperson, Arif Hossain Khan.

Notably, the new notes will no longer feature the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, they will highlight various historical and archaeological landmarks of the country. The bank plans to gradually apply this redesign to other denominations as well.

The new series of notes bear the signature of Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur. Initially, they will be issued through the Motijheel office of Bangladesh Bank, with distribution expanding to other branches nationwide over time.

Despite the release of these redesigned notes, all currently circulating paper notes and coins will remain legal tender and continue to be used.

In addition, to cater to currency collectors, the central bank has printed specimen (non-exchangeable) versions of the 1000, 50, and 20 Taka notes. These can be purchased at face value from the Currency Museum located in Mirpur.

This move by Bangladesh Bank is being viewed as a major shift in the country’s monetary design policy, aiming to modernize the aesthetic of banknotes while placing greater emphasis on national heritage.
