BNP leader Jeyara Khatun Ruzi has been summoned by the Bangladesh Army for setting up a livestock market on a school playground in defiance of rules and regulations. The army later instructed her to remove the market from the premises.
The incident took place in Chilmari upazila of Kurigram, where Jeyara Khatun Ruzi, the General Secretary of the BNP’s Chilmari Upazila Mahila Dal and a teacher at a government school, allegedly initiated preparations to hold a cattle market on the grounds of Chilmari Girls’ High School.
On Tuesday (June 3), the army officer in charge of Kurigram district summoned Ruzi to the local army camp and ordered her to cease all market-related activities on the school grounds.
Major Ahad, the responsible army officer, said, “We received complaints about a market being set up on a school field. Upon visiting the site, we confirmed that no permission was granted by the local administration for such an event. Although the lease for Thana Hat Bazar is in her brother’s name, that lease does not include rights for a livestock market—especially not on school property.”
He added, “We have clearly told her she cannot organize any such event on school grounds. If the local administration allows her to hold a market elsewhere with proper permission, that’s a different matter. But we’ll continue to monitor the situation. On Wednesday (June 4), we’ll keep watch. If we receive further reports, immediate legal action will be taken.”
Previously, on May 28, preparations were visibly underway at the Chilmari Girls’ High School field for holding a cattle market. A gate was erected at the school entrance, and poles were installed on one side of the field to mark stalls.
