Sarjis Alam, chief organizer of the Northern region of the National Citizens Party (NCP), stated that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was deliberately taken prisoner by the Pakistani military at the start of the Liberation War and remained incarcerated in Pakistani jails until after victory. While Sheikh Mujib had significant contributions prior to the war, he did not participate directly on the battlefield during the war itself.

He made these remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday morning (June 4).

Sarjis wrote, “Sheikh Mujib was held captive by the Pakistani military from the beginning of the Liberation War and was only released after victory. Though he had important contributions before the war, he was not directly involved on the battlefield during the war.”

He questioned, “Tajuddin Ahmed led the war effort directly on the ground—how can his recognition as a freedom fighter be revoked?”

Sarjis further said, “It should be the ministry’s responsibility to identify and cancel certificates of those falsely claiming to be freedom fighters for personal gain. However, it is unacceptable to remove from the freedom fighter list those who played crucial roles directly during the war.”

He concluded, “History must never be shaped by the interests of those in power; it should be preserved truthfully as it is.”
