BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the announcement by the interim government setting the national election for April 2026 has left the entire nation disappointed.
Speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Friday night (June 6), after returning from medical treatment in Bangkok, he expressed his frustration over the timeline.
“We have consistently said that the country needs an election as soon as possible. The expectation was that the election date would be announced for sometime before December,” Fakhrul said. “But with April being set, it’s not just BNP—it’s the whole nation that feels disappointed.”
Earlier that evening, the Chief Adviser, in a televised address to the nation, announced that the next national election would take place on any day in the first half of April 2026. He also mentioned that the Election Commission would provide a detailed roadmap at an appropriate time.
Mirza Fakhrul had traveled to Bangkok for urgent eye treatment. His wife, Rahat Ara Begum, accompanied him. They left Dhaka on May 12 at 2:45 AM on a Thai Airways flight.
