A tragic incident unfolded in Titas upazila of Cumilla, where a father poisoned his two daughters by mixing poison into a yogurt drink (lachhi) and then attempted to take his own life. The incident occurred early Monday morning (June 9) in Tulakandi village under Jagatpur Union.
The deceased are Monira (8) and Sanju Al Fatema (5), daughters of Monu Mia, a speech-impaired resident of Tulakandi. According to family and local sources, Monu Mia and both of his daughters were speech-impaired. Facing ongoing ridicule and social stigma due to their condition, Monu Mia was reportedly under immense emotional distress.
Unable to cope with the situation, he allegedly mixed poison into the lachhi and gave it to his daughters. Afterward, he consumed the same himself in an attempt to end his life.
Local residents rushed them to Titas Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared the two children dead. Monu Mia was transferred in critical condition to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Titas Police Station, Md. Shahid Ullah, stated that initial investigations suggest poverty, depression, and social pressure may have driven the father to commit this heartbreaking act. Authorities are currently investigating the case.
