BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has alleged that certain influential individuals within the administration are acting as allies of fascist forces and are enjoying undue privileges while positioned inside the Secretariat.
Speaking at a discussion titled “Democracy, Reform, and Reality in the Current Context” held at the National Press Club on Wednesday (April 23), Abbas dismissed claims that BNP loyalists are present in the administration, calling such remarks “childish and baseless.”
He stated, “Those sitting in key positions within the Secretariat are the ones reaping the benefits — not BNP affiliates. The real question is, are they being protected because of the advantages they provide to the fascist agenda?”
Mirza Abbas claimed that four secretaries within the Secretariat, along with one outside, are influencing the government’s direction, and that several members of the advisory council are actively obstructing the principal advisor from making independent decisions. He warned the principal advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, to remain vigilant.
“You must be careful, Dr. Yunus,” Abbas said. “There are people around you loyal to the Awami League, and they may steer you off course.”
He further warned that attempts to rehabilitate the Awami League in politics would be met with resistance. “No political party has endured more persecution from the Awami League than the BNP. Anyone trying to bring them back into power will face our continued struggle,” he asserted.
Abbas also expressed concern about divisions within the anti-fascist alliance, warning that any split could once again leave Bangladesh vulnerable to Indian hegemony. For this reason, he emphasized the need for unity across all parties — including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and NCP — regardless of ideological differences.
On the issue of reforms and elections, Abbas said, “BNP supports both reform and elections, but only reforms that are necessary and beneficial for the country — not those that invite disaster. The current confusion surrounding the electoral process is deeply concerning.”
Concluding his remarks, he reiterated his caution to the principal advisor: “Be alert to those around you who carry Awami League sympathies. They may lead you astray.”
