Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, top officials from law enforcement agencies have proposed an eight-day deployment of security forces to ensure law and order. However, the Election Commission (EC) has stated that a final decision will be taken after thorough review.

Election Commission Secretary Md. Akhtar Hossain, while speaking to reporters on Monday (October 20) at the EC Secretariat, confirmed that the army will remain deployed during the election in its existing capacity—‘in aid to civil power’.

He said, “Everyone wants a free, fair, and participatory election. The Commission has no concerns regarding the law and order situation. The army will remain deployed in its current role, supporting civil administration. In addition, other forces will be deployed as per the proposals received under the RPO (Representation of the People Order).”

Key Deployment Details:

  • Around 100,000 army personnel are expected to be engaged.
  • 150,000 police officers will be deployed across the country.
  • A significant number of Ansar members will also be on duty.
  • In total, approximately 600,000 law enforcement personnel will be mobilized.

The EC Secretary also clarified that drones will not be permitted during election campaigning. However, law enforcement agencies may use drones if necessary for surveillance or security purposes.

Proposed Deployment Timeline:

Unlike previous elections where law enforcement was deployed for five days, this time a proposal has been made for an eight-day deployment:

  • Three days before the election
  • On the election day
  • Four days after the election

Akhtar Hossain noted, “We have received the proposal and will evaluate it carefully before making a final decision.”

Earlier today, the Election Commission held a meeting at its headquarters in Agargaon with representatives from various law enforcement agencies to discuss preparations for ensuring a free and fair 13th National Election. The meeting was attended by the Chief Election Commissioner, four Election Commissioners, the EC Secretary, and other senior officials.
