National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman has stated that he holds only Bangladeshi citizenship and no other country’s citizenship.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (May 21) at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital, he clarified his citizenship status.
Khalilur Rahman said, “I have only one citizenship, and that is Bangladeshi citizenship. Before coming back to the country, I stayed in the United States for a while with my family. I do not have an American passport. Apart from Bangladesh, I do not hold the nationality of any other country. If it is claimed that I am a citizen of the United States because I lived there, then the same should be said for Tarique Rahman.”
He continued, “I request that you speak thoughtfully. If you throw a stone at me, it might hit someone else. Please do not create something that I am not. If you can, prove it. As a Bangladeshi citizen, I have certain rights. If those rights are not respected, it is unfortunate. Please stop these baseless claims.”
In the same press conference, Khalilur Rahman also addressed the ongoing discussions about a humanitarian corridor in Myanmar’s Rakhine region.
He reiterated, “I want to make it clear that we have not discussed any corridor with anyone, and we will not discuss it with anyone in the future. First, people need to understand what a corridor is. It is a means to evacuate people from disaster-stricken areas in an emergency situation.”
He further explained, “We are not evacuating anyone from here. What we are doing is that since aid to Rakhine cannot be delivered through other supply routes, the United Nations has requested that we assist by allowing them to send aid through this specific route.”
