The government has dismissed eight police officials, including controversial former Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, over allegations of prolonged unauthorized absence from duty and desertion.

The disciplinary action was taken through separate official notifications after investigations reportedly established charges of desertion and, in some cases, misconduct.

The dismissed officials are:

  1. Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, former Additional Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

  2. Shyamal Kumar Mukherjee, former Additional Deputy Inspector General (Additional DIG) of Tourist Police.

  3. Md. Tarek Bin Rashid, former Superintendent of Police (SP) of Lakshmipur.

  4. Md. Anisur Rahman, former DIG of Rajshahi Range.

  5. Farhana Taskin, former Assistant Police Commissioner of DMP.

  6. Md. Moniruzzaman Sarker, former Assistant Police Commissioner of DMP.

  7. S. M. Jahangir Hasan, former Additional Superintendent of Police of River Police.

  8. Kazi Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Police Commissioner in Barishal.

Harun Dismissed Effective August 2024

According to the official notification, Harun Or Rashid’s dismissal has been made effective from August 6, 2024.

He was charged with desertion under Rule 3(c) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018. Following an investigation and examination of relevant documents, the allegation was found proven beyond reasonable doubt. Consequently, the government imposed the major penalty of dismissal under Rule 4(3)(d).

The order took immediate effect.

Other Officials Also Dismissed

Former Additional DIG Shyamal Kumar Mukherjee was dismissed effective January 22, 2025. He is currently under temporary suspension and attached to the office of the DIG of Rajshahi Range.

Former DMP Assistant Police Commissioner Farhana Taskin, who is currently residing in Canada, was dismissed effective March 28, 2018.

Another former DMP Assistant Police Commissioner, Md. Moniruzzaman Sarker, was dismissed over allegations of misconduct and desertion, with the order effective July 1, 2019.

Former Additional Superintendent of River Police S. M. Jahangir Hasan was dismissed effective October 23, 2024.

Absence Without Authorization

Former Lakshmipur SP Md. Tarek Bin Rashid left his workplace on November 2, 2024, to take 15 days of recreation leave. He was expected to return on November 17 but remained absent without authorization.

After receiving no response to two show-cause notices, the government decided to dismiss him, with the approval of the President, effective November 17, 2024.

Former Rajshahi Range DIG Md. Anisur Rahman joined the River Police in Dhaka on August 27, 2024.

On February 17, 2025, he submitted a report stating that he could not attend office because of a cold, fever and cough. However, the report did not specify the type of leave, its duration or where he would be staying. He also failed to submit the required supporting documents.

Despite receiving several notices from River Police Headquarters, he neither returned to duty nor submitted the necessary reports. Subsequently, with presidential approval, he was dismissed effective February 17, 2025.

The official notifications stated that the dismissals followed departmental investigations and the completion of the required disciplinary procedures under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.
