Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that constitutional reforms will be undertaken to ensure that another July uprising does not take place in Bangladesh.

He also urged the opposition to participate in discussions of the Constitution Reform Committee rather than organizing long marches if they want to pursue reforms, including the establishment of an upper house of parliament.

The Home Minister made these remarks on Saturday evening (October 31) at a seminar held at the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum.

During the discussion, he said, “If the opposition wants to discuss constitutional reforms, including the upper house, it must participate in discussions of the reform committee instead of organizing long marches.”

Strengthening State Institutions

The Home Minister emphasized that constitutional amendments must strengthen state institutions to prevent the establishment of an authoritarian or fascist state and government in Bangladesh in the future.

He said the constitutional reform process should be designed to ensure that such a situation does not emerge again.

Asif Nazrul Calls for Balance of Power

Former Law Adviser to the interim government Asif Nazrul also spoke at the seminar.

He said, “Power should not be concentrated in the hands of any individual or institution. Instead, a balance must be established among parliament, the judiciary and constitutional institutions.”

The Home Minister called on everyone to unite in the national interest and work together to prevent the emergence of authoritarian rule and fascism in the future.
