The well-marked low-pressure area over the western-central Bay of Bengal and its adjoining regions has intensified into a cyclonic depression. It is moving north-northwest and may further strengthen into a deep depression, the Department of Meteorology has reported.

This information was released in a weather forecast signed by Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman on Wednesday (October 1).

According to the bulletin, at 3 PM, the depression was located:

  • 915 km southwest of Chattogram Port
  • 865 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar Port
  • 800 km southwest of Mongla Port
  • 795 km southwest of Payra Port

The system has increased the pressure gradient over the northern Bay of Bengal. Strong or squally winds are likely over the northern Bay of Bengal, coastal areas of Bangladesh, and the ports.

Within a 44 km radius of the depression’s center, wind speeds reach up to 40 km/h, which may rise to 50 km/h in gusts or squally conditions. The sea in the affected areas is turbulent.

Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra ports have been advised to display Local Storm Signal No. 3.

The Meteorological Department has also instructed fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal to navigate cautiously near the coast until further notice, so that they can quickly seek safe shelter in case of sudden adverse conditions.
