Water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers in the Rangpur division are expected to rise rapidly over the next two days. As a result, there is a risk of flooding in low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram districts.
This warning was issued in a bulletin signed by Partha Pratim Barua, Sub-Divisional Engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), on Sunday, October 5.
According to the bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours in Rangpur division as well as in the upstream regions of West Bengal, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh in India. Similar scattered heavy rainfall is likely over the next 24 hours in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, as well as across neighboring Indian territories.
While the Teesta River’s water level has remained steady in the past 24 hours, the levels of the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers have begun to rise. These rivers may cross their danger marks within the next 24 hours, potentially triggering flash floods in surrounding low-lying areas. However, water levels are expected to stabilize by Wednesday, October 8.
Additionally, the water levels of the Someshwari and Bhugai-Kangsha rivers are also expected to rise temporarily, which may cause brief flooding in adjacent lowlands. Other rivers in the northern region — including the Karatoa, Jamuneswari, Punarbhaba, Tangon, Atrai, Upper Atrai, Mahananda, and Ghaghot — may also experience rising water levels in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the latest 120-hour weather forecast for the country suggests that most areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Mymensingh divisions, and many parts of Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, may see light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds. Some areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Mymensingh divisions may experience moderately heavy to very heavy rain. Day and night temperatures across the country are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
